What type of coffin can we use?
We have a simple ethos at Eden Valley that everything that goes into the ground must either be beneficial to the soil or not harm it. The most popular type of coffins are wicker style willow coffins. This is a fantastic, renewable source of wood, that looks beautiful. Cardboard coffins are also popular and can come with custom printing, or be painted and written on by family and friends. We have also had solid wood coffins, bamboo, sea grass, shrouds and even living mushroom coffins. We will not accept coffins that are made from MDF wood, which can leach out toxins and we will also not accept coffins that have been lacquered or varnished, as they will also contain toxins.
Are there any headstones or plaques?
There are no formal headstones or plaques at Eden Valley. Each grave can be planted with a memorial tree off our approved tree list. Alternatively wild flowers, suitable to the area and local soils can be planted over the plot. It becomes a living, breathing legacy, a protected nature reserve to be enjoyed, not only by visitors in the future but by the local wildlife
How do we know where a person is buried?
A simple and subtle marker system, based on a conventional grid system using surveyor points is used to identify where every person is buried. We also encourage people to use What3Words to help identify plots. If you are visiting and are unsure of where a plot is please contact us a few days before so we can put out a marker.
Can I buy a burial plot in advance?
Plots can be purchased in advance or at time of need. Often the partner of the deceased will purchase the plot next to their loved one. For people wishing to organise where they will eventually be buried, buying a plot in advance is a great option. It also means that the costs of funerals can be spread out, with the purchase of the plot often done years before the funeral.
Are bodies embalmed?
No we do not take any embalmed bodies, the only exception being if a person has been repatriated from abroad.
Do we need to use a Funeral Director?
You do not need to use a Funeral Director, although the majority of families do employ one. Sometimes families and friends choose to organise the entire process of the funeral themselves and this can be a very positive experience for them. Alternatively for families not wishing to have the formality of a Funeral Director but not wanting to organise the funeral themselves, Eden Valley offers a light touch funeral service where we will organise and conduct the funeral with the help of family and friends. For a list of funeral directors approved by the Association of Natural Burial Grounds please follow the link below: http://www.naturaldeath.org.uk/index.php?page=funeral-directors-list

Other funerals will take advantage of all the space we have to offer and set up a marquee or gazebo, bring in catering and even live music, to provide whatever feels the best way to say goodbye. Services can also take place elsewhere with just the interment at the site
